It might take a year or even more but 4.5 years is stretching it. Dont forget that suppliers do not have to access meters for two years, 5 years in the case of BG. Many of the big suppliers definitely do not stick to the two year rule anyway,, EDF and Scot Power most certainly don t, I work for those two as well as BG who are the only ones to run their business properly and at least try very hard to stop energy theft.
No we are not agreed at all, from what the OP has stated they thought the £55 was for both gas and electricity and were unaware the meter was not registering. It cannot be their fault if the gas supplier does not check the meter correctly.
This needs further investigation and a fair payment to be made, which shouldn't go back as far as 4.5 years.0 -

Any supplier would be reducing the £55 monthly direct debit every year if one of the meters was nt operating. The user would then be getting a very big build up of credit. As Naedanger implied , a build up of credit to only £89 is odd. Somethings not quite right with this question0 -
I've been with EON since I moved in to my house on 28th February 2011, I called the day I moved in to give all my details and set up my direct debit and give a meter reading, They estimated my usage for Gas and Electric would be £55 a month.
My meter has been read every 6 months by there technicians that come around, Never had an issue.
I think what the OP said at the start they wont have been aware the meter hasn't moved from the time they moved in and has allowed access to meter readers. It should have been picked up earlier by Eon especially as they were getting reads. I guess the OP should just put it down to experience as most people wouldn't be aware of this situation. Ire should be directed at the people who deliberately tamper or block access knowing they are stealing energy.0 -

Unfortunately the £55 might be just enough for the gas, who knows without more information.0 -

OP states that she started off at £55 a year for both gas and electric. It will be the electric meter which has stopped..Super rare for a gas meter to stop without human help of course, so OP would have a much reduced direct debit over the years to at least £30 a month and a build up of a fairly decent credit. OP could have collected some credit back over the years. I am saying that people would be aware of this fault eventually even if it takes a year or two.4 and a half years is too long. I am a cynical old git I know, but thats because I ve been dealing with so many liars and fiddlers over the years.
As Wolf says, we should direct "Ire " at them.Personally I d like to be directing them in the best suits to the Magistrates courts where theft and fraud and criminal damage is usually dealt with. I d also be pushing the suppliers like EDF/Scot Power and Npower ( the worst of the lot ) also to criminal courts for nicking money off me and giving it to the legions of thieves0 -

If the electric meter didn't read from day one then it's pretty obvious the £55 could have been taken up by gas. If the OP didn't check the bills they wouldn't know.
Agreed it is pretty rare for a gas meter to stop working although it can happen, but not so rare to be fitted in a non working state.0 -

I have been to new occupiers many times where they have moved into a bypassed electric meter.Done properly no one would know so there is a small chance that the meter is internally bypassed. Sangamo Weston analogue meter stops a lot and most people, including meter readers would nt spot it.
OP states that she worked out her usual usage from past house so its a combination of gas/electric DD to arrive at £550 -

Where does the OP say that?
Let's face it if the OP knew their meter wasn't registering they wouldn't open a can of worms by asking for the £89 back.0 -
I'm just amazed that someone has had their meter read every 6 months for 5 years. How often does that happen?0

Good morning and welcome to the forum.
To be honest, there's mot much more I add to this, everyone has given some great info and I know you've already spoken to us about it.
If the OP can come back with any further info or answers to some of the questions that would be ace.
These faulty meters are looked after by a team, they'll estimate the usage based on information from the new meter and then they'll go through the calculations with you.
Billing code, reduced balance or payment arrangements are all something that will need to be discussed when they have all of the information and an investigation has been done, so keep talking to us.
If you're struggling to get hold of the team dealing with your account, please let me know and I'll help you.
Thank you
