Admiral took insurance money - I didnt renew

Just seen that Admiral have taken £232 out of my account for the renewal of my home insurance for the year, I messaged them via the 'contact us' option on their website saying I did not want to renew, but they've still took it out, I'm going to call them this afternoon but wanted to know where I stand?

Even more angry that I went on a comparison site and got a identical quote, from Admiral for £40 cheaper!

    On the website it says:
Just call our Renewals department and let them know if you don't want to renew. If you call us after the new period of insurance has started, we can still cancel the policy, although there will be a cancellation fee. If you cancel outside the 14 day cooling off period you will be charged for the days on cover

Did you call them? Even on the contact us form the renewal->leave at renewal says to call them, so I don't know where you sent them a message from...
  • Pretty much every insurance policy will automatically renew unless you let them know in a phone call that you don't wish to.

It came about because lots of car insurance customers were complaining and blaming their insurers when they forgot about renewal and found themselves driving without insurance, It cost insurers a lot of money in Ombudsman claims and so they adopted the policy of automatically renewing. Home insurance soon followed suit.

For future reference, you can tell them not to auto-renew when you set up the policy at the start, rather than having to remember to do so a year later.

All home insurance companies don't do that, well at least co-op didn't when i renewed last month.
They wrote to me and said if i wanted to renew I had to call them. I didn't as was £100 more expensive than if i went with them through comparethemarket so i just set up a new policy.

That's extortionate, mine with AA is £62 a year.

    .... and that's a ridiculous comment.

Someone with £100k of contents with a rebuild cost of £1 million is not going to be paying the same premium as someone with 1/10 of the contents in a cheap house. There are also other factors such as location and claims history.

My insurance is due to be renewed next week - current quote is £512.93

Auto renewals are a way of luring you in and then stinging you, ,Mrs Kaya works in the commercial energy sector and they do it all the time and make millions, lure them in with a cheap quote in the knowledge that a huge percentage won't bother checking come renewal time when you can charge them you "standard tariff" , insurance companies are no different. Rac renewal came in for year two at £183 for me, a quick phone call and a good moan and suddenly it drops to £63 so the extra £120 was just a "pay attention stupid" form of taxation

Just give them a ring and say you didnt know it was auto renewal.

I bought last years insurance via compare the market and didnt realise that morethan had auto renewed. As the quote was the same on both, I rang the new one up and got it refunded immediately.

No hassle, nothing to get wound up over.
