Car insurance cancellation

I've stupidly managed to have my car insurance cancelled for non payment, I genuinely read the letter to say to pay by the 5th and thought I could indeed pay on the 5th (I only put it off a single day because I'd lost my bank card and was waiting on the replacement and they wouldn't let me use my other halfs card over the phone without his verbal permission as he was at work) anyway so I rang up yesterday to pay and they told me it had already been cancelled. The woman was very rude and unsympathetic etc etc etc anyway my question is, has anyone got any tips on insurers etc who will insure me now?
I've done a confused.com and a few others and can get insurance through a broker for about £200 more than my best quote for this year so it's not the end of the world but if anyone has any tips and/or brokers to avoid I would be very grateful!
Thanks in advance :)

This cancelled policy remains on your record for evermore, so it's worth fighting if they have cancelled early.

If that is so, then it's unfair and insurers are bound to treat customers fairly.

If you feel you have grounds for a complaint then follow their complaints procedure which will be set out in the policy documents.

As far as finding a new insurer then see if a local broker (not swinton) can help find a company that specialises in difficult to cover clients
  • Thanks for that. I do intend to appeal the cancellation as I don't fancy having to pay extra for crap insurance literally forever.

I'm really gutted. I've been without a bank card for nearly a month due to my bank sending cards that never arrive and having to cancel them repeatedly, hence why my recurring card payment didn't go out and the non payment occurring in the first place.

The letter was dated 29th but only arrived on the 3rd - if I'd have known it was going to be cancelled on the 5th obviously I would've gone to my other halfs work and got him to verbally give permission for me to pay with his card. It's very frustrating.

I shop in Tesco a LOT but I wonder if it's worth threatening to never shop there again lol (it's Tesco insurance) - feeling very cross but hey ho I am not entirely without blame I suppose.

Grrrrr :) thanks for your reply

What EXACTLY did the letter say about when to pay? (type it out word-for-word) Then people may be able to advise on whether it's worth you pursuing a complaint. Tesco Insurance will have a formal complaints process - you can ask them for it. You'd need to explain the facts clearly and without emotion (don't threaten to never shop at Tesco again - they won't care).

As Quentin said, if the cancellation stands then you'll have to answer "yes" to "Have you ever had an insurance policy cancelled" forever more.
