Will I need to pay an exit fee at new house?

We're completing on our house today, and I'm looking in to energy suppliers. Currently, EDF provide the electric and there's no gas. From what I understand, I need to contact EDF to put the electric in our name, and then I can switch it away (probably to the new BG dual fuel tariff). However, will I get stung by an exit fee from EDF, even though I'll only be with them for a few days? Is there a particular tariff i should ask for that has no fees? Thanks.

  • When you take responsibility you will be on what is a Deemed contract which is basically their Standard rates. Not the chespest and has no exit fees. However, no tariff has any exit fees with EDF Energy so I would recommend you register with them as soon as possible, giving them opening meter readings also reads the day you actually call them if different to the day you move in, and go onto one of their Blue tariffs and then decide if you wish to stay with them or switch. Hope this helps.

You don't need to ask them anything. You don't need to contact them at all.

Just move in and switch. EDF may send you a bill.

I moved here 6 months ago and switched same day. I still haven't had a bill from the previous supplier. I've had welcome letters and requests for meter readings but no bill.

Follow the sound advice above given by SoleTraderSteve. If you don't, then you may find yourself being pursued by EDF for a very small debt. The Deemed Contract will be on Standard/Variable terms so there will be no exit fee. Once you have given EDF your details - along with meter readings which you need to keep - then you are free to switch. If you don't contact EDF, then they have a right to block all attempts to switch until such time as they have confirmation that you are one of their customers.

EDF's Blue Price Promise Nov 2016 fixed tariff has no leaving fee - you may as well contact them to be placed on that rather than the deemed standard tariff (if you contact them straight away they will probably put it through backdated without any expensive deemed usage).

You'll be with EDF for more than a few days-typical switch time is round 3 weeks.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Not good advice, contact them as soon as possible and give them your meter readings from the day you move in otherwise you may find yourself billed for the previous occupiers usage if they have not given a final reading.
