I have had a problem for a while with svchost.exe using high cpu, taking a long time looking for updates and generally causing a very slow system on granddaughter's already slow netbook. Done all the searches, all the recommended fixes and even a clean install but still having the problem. This morning whilst checking what updates were available for my main laptop it looks like MS have admitted there is a problem, found the cause and KB3102810 has been issued as an optional update. Have installed it and first run of netbook looks hopeful, loads of updates found in 5 minutes, svchost cpu use just bobbing up and down. Download onto a stick from here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 and run it.

This is for machines on a corporate network
When you install updates by using System Center Configuration Manager, the installation takes a long time, and System Center Configuration Manager becomes overloaded.
SCCM is the deployment system used on netorks is not Windows Update

  • Indeed, although the details on the MS site were a bit unclear. I installed this on my Windows 7 laptop this morning and it has not cured the long time to scan and install updates. I got there but it took an hour to search for updates and half an hour to download them.
Maybe now MS know the reason they will release one for Windows Update.

All I can say is that it has worked for me. This morning I have been installing 200+ updates in batches on my factory restore. The other day I left it searching for updates overnight and didn't find any.

you could install procexp from MS (process explorer) and have a look around, especially around the "threads" and "File Handles"
