  • I suspect that if you think it's easier to get money from the UK Government than the French government you may be kidding yourself.

    Sacrebleu !

I doubt either process would be "easy".

Neither scheme is a government scheme, both are statutory industry schemes. I'd still be interested in why you seem to be suggesting that it would be as easy to get money back under the french compensation scheme.

I have no experience with the french scheme but had to use FSCS twice. The last time was as recent as May this year. My prior experience with a non-UK protection scheme is enough to make me absolutely never touch a non-UK scheme ever again (note, I am a Europhile, so I am not powered by anti-EU hostilities, quite the contrary).

Once an organisation has been declared in default, FSCS is amazingly efficient.

It is not the job, and not within the powers, of FSCS to declare the organisation to be in default, and that's where the issue lies. In theory, an organisation can go on for a very long time without declaring that they are in default, and neither the consumer nor FSCS can do much about it. This can cause tremendous anxiety, and possibly financial problems, too, if you are dependent on the money.

Living through the insolvency of a company, and eventually getting my funds back, is not an experience I would want to have to make again. But at least if it is a UK company I speak the same language as them and know the details of the relevant UK legislation, and I can go to people like my MP or directly to the Treasury if I am unhappy with how the legislation works. I would not be able to do anything like this in France. If you are, that's good for you and you don't need to share my concerns.
