I've just had an email from Google, complete with an ID reference, asking me to authenticate my account or some applications won't work.
I'm assuming it's a scam, probably thanks to Talktalk, and have deleted it.
Anyone else had such a thing, ever!

Did it have a link for you to click on to take you to the site ? - if so, im guessing a scam.0

Oh, yes!
I didn't click it, of course. Such a coincidence after the TT saga.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

What applications do you have on your system that you think might require your Google account? I can't think of any on mine.0
-
Exactly. OH has gmail on his phone, so no problem.
I have google earth and google maps. My street view do how's iSight, but that is linked to google I think.
All seem to be working normally.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

These types of email have been around for many, many years. Common ones are pretend Paypal, eBay or Apple. Not sure what that has to do with TT?Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

I had one here. The links went to googlekyc.co.uk and if you do a whois on that you will see that the domain was registered on November 5th, ie yesterday, to a company called 'Identity Protect Limited' which is in fact an organisation set up to hide the true identity domain registration owners. Most definitely spam, but it had me thinking for a few minutes. Sent to my non-Google address and I have no credit card information with Google anyway.0

If the TalkTalk hacking (much smaller that originally thought according to BBC News today) is making people nore wary of phishing attempts then at least there was one benefit from it. Hopefully the other will be the huge embarrassment caused might actually lead to better security from more than just them.0

Well done for not clicking it - but it has nothing atall to do with the talktalk hack ..
Its simply a phishing email and will have been sent out blanket to millions of other people too ..

Just to say, maybe it's a coincidence about being a TT customer, but although the extent of the 'sensitive' information (bank details, passwords, etc) wasn't as great as thought, the hackers still got their hands on a very large list of active email addresses.
I am another TT customer who has received this email from googlekyc (I have a gmail account as well as TT, but at no point have I given or have they ever asked for my bank details!!!) - of course I googled it to see whether other people were affected and found this thread
If anyone else gets this or other similar emails, ALWAYS check to see if it's true before clicking any links, even if it looks like it might be legit!
In case anyone is wondering, this is the title and body of the email (with my details xx'ed out):
