Ho,

We currently live in rented accomodation and have served notice to leave on the 20th November.

We are a single fuel household and just use electricity from British Gas.

We have already instructed British gas to move our current account over to our new address.

Just had a letter through today stating that our existing energy account has been shut down on the 4th of november. I rang them and it turns out someone else has changed the energy supplier of the property to Spark energy??? Can they do this without our permission? Supposedly the energy has been switched over now so either the new tenant/landlord/whoever has switched is paying for the energy we are using.

Surprised its that easy to change someones energy supplier without their permission?!

Spark energy have been up to this dirty trick for years.Maybe they can do it.They do a deal with letting agents/landlords , for commission of course.I read a few meters for Spark Energy and flat dwellers are always asking me how come their supplier is now Spark energy.Although they are a pretty cheap supplier on yearly fixed deals their prepay and standard tariffs are on the high side.theres nothing to stop you switching supplier. Also be aware they take advanced payments

do you think I will be getting a massive bill for the two weeks we'll be "the occupier" under spark at our current address? :(
  • Hopefully BG have used an actual meter reading and not an estimate to end their account, and that same reading is going to be Sparks opening reading. If you have elected to pay on the bill at least they can t whip a large amount from your bank.If you are on a prepayment meter please use Sparks electric meter key and not BGs. They should have posted you one

As already posted, Spark pay bungs to Letting Agents to Switch let dwelling to Spark
BUT - Look at your lease, for the Agent to do this there must be clause in it that says Spark will be the supplier - If there isn't one Complain loudly to the Agent

Agents usually do a deal with Spark whilst the property is untennated, and the next tenant in has the Spark clause in thier lease.
It's rare that it would be done near the end of a tenacy and possibly illegal - I suspect that's what has happened is the the Agent has done a Spark deal to take effect at the end of your tenancy, and Spark have jumped the gun
