Google Adsense - Tacky?

Morning
First post so please be gentle with me!
I've created a website for romance book reviews and added google adsense to the footer, but what a hassle! I seem to have to constantly monitor it for competitors to exclude and the feedback I've had from friends & family is that it's slightly tacky and doesn't give a good image to the site.
Thought I'd take a non-scientific poll, so, google adsense - tacky? yea or nay

A bit tacky, plus i've configured my Firefox browser so i don't see them anymore...0

I use it to see whenever another site starts up which is a direct copy of ours (about once per month). So unless you want to keep your finger on competitors in an easy way, the value is dubious.0

its fine if implemented properly for instance most of the big web sites use it ie timesonline and many large media sites use it without looking tacky however most casual users just plaster it everywhere without a single consideration of blending it inThanks

I use it, for information based sites, it covers the cost of good quality hosting and leaves me with a bit after, its one of them things you really have to work with, by putting less adds on some pages i ended up with more clicks, its trial and error.0

Great to see some replies. I've attempted to blend it in a la mattwine, but something still grates about it Guess I'll make a definite decision soon as it's hard to make sure you don't get dodgy advertisers. I use phpAdsNew or OpenAds as it's now know and could rotate my own, carefully chosen advertisers.
Keep the replies coming
