Auto Config

I suspect it is something to do with the external screen as I have just removed the plug and the message has disappeared and isn't showing on the laptops own screen.
What do I do now?0 -
As quickly as this problem came it appears to have gone by unplugging and switching off the monitor0

Very short lived success as it is back again!0

Bet the external screen is older than the laptop. Bet the laptop has a higher screen resolution that the external screen? - Am I a winner? If so your external screen may not be able to handle the resolution and size of the laptop output.
"Auto Config Please Wait" might be generated by the screen trying to detect signal values
You may have to adjust your resolution and colours to a lower value, then work your way up0 -

No not a winner as I have had the screen for a couple of years working perfectly ok with the laptop until the last couple of days.0 -

OK, let's first identify the problem. You external monitor is the thing producing the message, not your computer (or any software on it).
An external screen's "autoconfiguring" prompt comes up whenever the monitor thinks there's been a change in the video feed. This is usually due to a change in screen resolution or refresh rate... but it can also be due to a defective monitor or a dodgy cable connection between your computer and your monitor.
If it happens randomly whenever you're just sitting doing nothing (rather than whenever you open a particular program) then the first thing I'd check would be the cable. Replace it if possible, and if not then at least reseat the connections at both ends. You might find you're able to trigger the "configuring" prompt by wiggling the cable. If it's NOT a cable fault, then it's probably the monitor itself that's on the way out.
If it happens predictably (e.g. whenever you open a specific program) then it's a screen resolution issue. Updating your video drivers (see post #4) and locking your screen resolution (see my earlier comment RE display scaling) might help in this case.0 -

Thank you for your reply, when I tracked the problem to the external monitor I had wondered if the monitor was on the way out although apart from the message it is working ok0
