Increased energy costs with one more person in the house
Options
I take meter readings every morning and have noticed my usage and costs have increased by up to 50% compared with last year. Trying to rack my brains as to where the energy has gone, all I can think is; The washing machine is going 1 load mid week more The Dri Buddi is going 1 load more a week Then I remember cooking, before I use to get by with a table top induction ring and microwave, now the oven and a couple of rings are going for an hour most nights on account of the OH not liking anything other than traditional cookers/ovens (especially microwaves). Typically I used to use about 10-12 units a day, now with just those small changes it has gone up to 18-20 units a day. Attempts but failed attempts to save money: Tried halogen ovens but they are just too small Washing at 30 degrees but towels and shirts were still smelly Timer switch on the thermal for 4 hours of hot water heating a day. does anyone have any further ideas on saving money before winter comes and the heaters get switched on?

When my son was living at home my dual fuel bill was 83 pounds a month. Now just 53 pounds. He did his own washing and sometimes cooked his own meals and also had his laptop, mobile phone and all the other electricity eating gadgets. He would also complain he was cold when he was in his room but insisted on wearing shorts and t shirt round the house whatever the season. at least he paid his way so I suppose I should not complain. He is living overseas with another family and also pays his way there too but I will be interested how he fares once he has his own place next year. I bet he will buy himself some woolly jumpers!0

Can you increase your loft insulation? That can substantially decrease your bills. My postings reflect my lifetime's experience and my opinion. You are quite welcome to respond with your experiences and option, whether similar or different.0

Rule of thumb is that heating costs don't rise much with an extra person as you generally heat the space. General electricity will be impacted by an extra person, any electrical item that produces heat will have the biggest impact and (I don’t just mean things used for heating i.e PC’s/laptops can get hot)0

Heating and hot water account for up to 80% of your usage. Quote us actual kWh figures year on year if you want meaningful advice, and tell us how then property is heated and hot watered, and how large it is. Insulation? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Going from tabletop cooking appliances to a traditional oven, and running a W/machine and a dryer once extra a week, is nowhere near enough to consume an extra 10Kwh a day, everyday.
Your pre-OH consumption of 10-12 Kwh a day was thirsty in itself
What heating do you do use?
How big is the dwelling?
How old is the Fridge, Freezer, TV & W/machine
How much kit is there running 24/70 -
Maybe hes got a small electric fire hidden in the wardrobe. I once shared lodgings with a lad who would leave it on all night in his room. He also was nt keen on the cold0
