offer of discounted microsoft office student could be misselling

Options
i have recently purchased a sony vaio n38 and was looking through the literature which came with the vaio and in the booklet titled "discover your vaio" there is quite clarely stated the promise that we would be eligible for a reduced price upgrade to office 2003 home and student as works 8.5 is already installed on the vaio. the thing is that microsoft have never offered an upgrade version of office home and student either in 2003 version or 2007 version as they feel that the home and student is already avaliable at the most reduced rate to anybody who wants to buy it for home or student use about £100.
so whats my problem... well we were sold the vaio by the sony centre at bluewater and they used the promise of a cheap upgrade route to the full version of office home and student as a sales tool to entice us to buy...
I feel that this is an issue that should be addressed by the sony sales management and i would be most happy if they could provide information on how to obtain the reduced priced upgrade version of office home and student 2003 or 2007 as promised by their literature and by their sale staff if they cant then they are misselling the vaio laptops and should be investigated by trading standards and made to compensate all of us who are unable to benefit from this offer.
would like also to hear from anybody who has had this same issue with sony.

i have spoken to sony about this issue i have also upon their direction spoken with microsoft and with microsoft resellers about the upgrade offer sony have passed this case onto head office and the resellers confirmed that there is no upgrade version of either 2003 or 2007 office home and student i wasnt aware that there is no connection between sony and sony centres the name is a little misleadng the exact reading from the sony pamphlet titled "discover the creativity inside" is as follows from page 29 "as microsoft works is also pre-installed on your vaio, you`ll get a price reduction when you upgrade to the full version of microsoft office student and teacher 2003."
to me the above wording is quite precise and not at all ambiguous. by posting here i was trying canvas the opinion of other vaio owners who may have also had the same issue i feel that this is worth persuing if only to stop sony misrepresenting the offers that come with their laptops.

  • hi you did say to let you know if i gat anywhere with this issue so here i am to say that sony have agreed that the documentation and salesmanship for our laptop was at fault and have agreed to make a contribution to the purchase price for a full version of office home and student when our trial period is up so thats £50 quid off it just proves its worth being polite and persistant thanks for your earlier replys on this didnt help much but at least it gave me somewhere to air my gripes.sony have redeemed themselves in my eyes but really they have gotten off lightly if all the other people out there who have recently bought a vaio laptop were to check there documentation that came with the vaio specifically the discover the the magic inside booklet page 29 they would probably find that should also be entitled to request that sony honour there promises about upgrade price reductions for office full version.

Although the two products you quote are quite different - "Home and Student" edition is not the same as "Student and Teacher" edition - you're quite correct that these are seen as already so low-cost that upgrade pricing does not exist. For the Student and Teacher edition, you also need to be able to prove that you're either one of those - the box has no product in it when you purchase from a high-street, and you have to send off your receipt and proof of eligibility before they'll send you the CD.

If you're a student then why are you bothering with an office 2003 upgrade? You can get office 2007 ultimate (rrp £599) for just £39. http://www.theultimatesteal.co.uk/
