Item delivered in husband's name that he did not order

I won a computer console once. There was no warnings, no congratulations and nothing to say the package I got was due. It just turned up out of the blue with nothing but my name and address on it.
I only found out later that I had won a competition prize I had completely forgotten I entered into.
That's what I would think a competition win, my son won a computer a few years ago, just turned up with a load of games. We were thinking where it had come from, and I ended up looking through all his comics and found the comp, but the prize was slightly different, but rang them up and they confirmed he had won it. You would think these companies would put an compliment slip in or something to say where its from.0 -
Ordering a gift for someone isn't ordering it on their behalf. Not in any dictionary I've ever looked at. It's ordering it on your behalf for their benefit.
But even if you believe that it is, your argument doesn't hold in this example, because the item wasn't ordered as a gift for the OPs husband or in any other way for their benefit.
I'm not commenting on what the act was intended for; just challenging your definition of the phrase.
And you know that how?
On behalf of simply means you're doing it in interest of someone else. Not sure what dictionary you're looking at but oxford english dictionary says:behalf of or on someone's/something's behalf
1 In the interests of a person, group, or principle:
When sending a gift to someone, you're acting in their interest but not with their authority.
When giving evidence on behalf of someone, you are acting in their interest but not necessarily with their authority.
If you sign for a letter on behalf of someone, you are acting in their interest but not necessarily with their authority. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Just an update, apologies for delay, we have a new baby so all over the place in terms of timings!
My husband contacted Apple who arranged a return and advised him to inform his bank just in case. Credit file checked and all looks fine there.
After I posted we had a delivery of some stuff H had ordered and the courier had a collection note in my husband's name. I said there was nothing to be collected and they were ok with that and heard nothing more- I suspect this must have been linked.
Thanks again for all the advice.0
