I won a computer console once. There was no warnings, no congratulations and nothing to say the package I got was due. It just turned up out of the blue with nothing but my name and address on it.

I only found out later that I had won a competition prize I had completely forgotten I entered into.

I also wondered whether the husband entered competitions, and whether it could be a prize. Occasionally prizes just turn up without notice.

    Good luck

Just to say that if someone comes to collect it say you haven't received anything and get their contact details so you can contact them if/when it arrives. Then pass this on to police when the fraud comes to light.

The phone book, along with his address and name...

The reason I questioned it was your post said:
A friend had this with an iphone.

He received a knock a phone call

It read very much like one of those 'friend' stories, first you said knock, then you said phone call. I've heard a few variants of this story all happening to a friend of a friend. I believe very few of them.
I apologise if you are indeed a first hand friend of the person this happened to but many repeating these stories aren't.

It is because I am typing on a stupid ipad that changes sentences, and I often don't notice until i have posted. It also cannot keep up with my typing so misses chunks of words out!

It appears his name and address were chosen from the phone book, and a stolen credit card used. Parcel was sent to his address, then a phone call to his land line saying parcel was delivered in error, and a courier would come to the house to collect. Obviously having the name, landline and address, a lot of people might have fallen for it, but he is the suspicious type, so decided to call their bluff.

He is the only person I know of this happening to though! he is also the type of person that would want something for nothing, so was no doubt very awkward over sending it back.

I Assume it would have been the credit card owner who would have lost out rather that him though???.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Makes sense if they picked him from the phone book, quite a clever way of doing it really. Probably another good reason to opt out of being in it. Last one we had (and it was a long time ago) was about half an inch thick :p

Since there has been a request on his behalf, they are not unsolicited.
How do you figure that? 'On behalf' means acting as a representative or with the authority of somebody else.

On behalf of equally means sending a gift to someone. You have ordered it with the intentions of them receiving it. Theres no requirement to be acting with authority.

The unsolicited goods act was not made to help consumers benefit from mistakes or the like. It was made to stop companies purposely sending out goods with the intention of charging for it later on.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Ordering a gift for someone isn't ordering it on their behalf. Not in any dictionary I've ever looked at. It's ordering it on your behalf for their benefit.

But even if you believe that it is, your argument doesn't hold in this example, because the item wasn't ordered as a gift for the OPs husband or in any other way for their benefit.

I'm not commenting on what the act was intended for; just challenging your definition of the phrase.

How did they get his number?

How do any of these scammers get our numbers?

They buy lists of them passed on by other companies.

We are always getting calls that ask for us by name.
  • Even if the laptop wasn't sent on the behalf of the OP's husband, there is no way that the company that sent it could have been aware of this.

Even though it might well be a scam, the laptop was sent out in good faith by a company who believed that it had been ordered by or on behalf of the person it was sent to and I would be amazed if Trading Standards or anyone in a legal position truly thought that the laptop would class as unsolicited goods.

The word "behalf" can mean "in the interests of"
    — on behalf of or in behalf of
: in the interest of; also : as a representative of

and a present could well be said to be in the interests of the person it was ordered for.
