What does 'unable to proceed with your application at this time' mean?

This might be a daft question, but having used the eligibility checker on here the other night, I opted to apply for a balance transfer card with HSB@ and as it directed me to their website I logged in as I'm an existing customer. I updated a couple of personal details and clicked apply/confirm. This went straight to a page which said,

'We are unable to proceed with your application at this time'

Does this mean that they did a credit check which will show up? Or just not enough info or something not working on the website or similar?

I'm not sure if it means I've done an application and been rejected or not. Which means I don't know if I should apply for a different card.

Sorry if that sounds like a silly question, but I'd be grateful if someone could take a minute to explain what they think it means.TIA.

well I'd interpret that as their server being unavailable.
Did it say anything else at all? like "come back later"?

No it didn't. And there was no delay between clicking and the new page popping up.

I'd interpret that as a "sorry, but this has been declined" leading them to be unable to proceed any further with the application for you.

Ok, but do you think that's like not meeting criteria so it's a no, as opposed to a check that would show on my file?

It doesn't matter which it is, I just need to figure out if it will show up and hinder another application if I make one soon, which I need to sort as I have a 0% deal ending in Jan with a few hundred left that I'm unlikely to clear in time.

    Thank you for replying.

Try again on a different day and at a different time. If it is a web site error then you may be luckier next time. If you still keep getting the same message then chances are you have been declined, but the message could be a little clearer if that is the case.

Fairly sure that it means a decline and yes they would have carried out a credit check on you.

The wording is just a nice way of saying declined.

You should look at all 3 of your credit files to check that everything is ok. If nothing is untoward, I'm guessing either your debt to credit ratio is too high or you failed on the affordability factor.

He must have forgotten that he'd already spammed us once in this thread, although I doubt if he'll be around to try much longer.
