How do I find out the best energy supplier before I move in?

I move into my new house on Friday which is larger then my current property so I want to ensure I keep the bills as low as possible. All comparison sites are asking for information I wont know until I have lived there for a while. Does anybody have any ideas on how I can choose the best supplier as soon as I move in?

Remember that you have to sign up with the existing supplier of the property, So ring them of Friday, give them your opening meter readings and then start a switch which will take 3-5 weeks.
You could just use average consumption figures but if you work out your last 12 months usage in kwh and add 10-15% should be somewhere near.

Hi mrmcmc

When you move into your new property you'll initially be supplied by the previous occupant's suppliers on a deemed contract, effectively the supplier's standard tariff.

Hopefully the previous owner will share with you who these are, but if not our faq provides a couple of useful numbers to call and check.

The first thing you will want to do is get off the suppliers standard tariff, check their website or give them a call once the account is open and see what tariffs they offer with no exit fees.

Once you've signed up with the existing supplier they should tell you your estimated annual usage in kWh, which will be based on the previous occupant's usage, you can use these figures to shop around for the best supplier and tariff.
