I don't know about those cards but I did it in error with Tesco and they didn't credit my payment to them, I had to call them to realise it and was warned they would close my account if I did it again. All that glitters is not gold.0

In all of the T&C's the only place I could find any mention of a credit balance was the Nationwide Select Visa where it says:
"7(e)
If we close your account for any reason and, at the date of closure, it has had a
credit balance for the previous 6 months, then upon closure, that balance will
be removed from your account and donated to a charity of our choice. You can
contact us to retrieve any money removed in accordance with this clause at any
time within 6 years from the date your account was closed"

This and similar wording is in every credit card agreement I have.
The OP specifically mentions Santander and Vanquis.
Santander:17.5 You should not make payments that place the Account in credit. If you do, we may still restrict the use of the Card and the Account to the amount of your Credit Limit and we can return any credit balance to you.
Vanquis:11.10 You should not make payments that put your Account into credit. If you do so, we will not pay any interest.
However, these are shoulds rather than musts and such T&Cs are not strictly enforced. I've accidentally put some of my credit cards in a positive balance without penalty.
An example is when I paid £300 to my Halifax Clarity card that had a £0 balance when I meant to pay it in to my Halifax Reward account. I spent it.
As others have said, card holders may not be able to spend more than their credit limit even if the account has a positive balance. And Section 75 protection would be lost if a purchase was made from a positive balance and and not credit.0
