Coax/satellite cabling question

Hey everyone

Just moved into a new build and want to wire sky to all the rooms. The developers have fitted all the coax cable to each room but there is no tv aerial in the loft. I have sky downstairs and made sure an octo lnb was fitted when this was installed.

From what I can gather it is just standard coax. Can I use this for anything or do I need to run from the dish to each room? (Plan is to use them for freesat).

If I can't use the coax, is there anything else it can be used for?

Thanks all

Satellite coax is quite high quality, so it might be good enough or it might not. Did they tell you anything about the cable they installed?
You will need one or two satellite cables from the dish to each of the satellite receivers, generally your installer would use a single long cable run, so I don't know how trying to join the cable to something else would affect the signal quality.

  • Where does all this coax go if not to an aerial? If you're going the octo LNB route rather than the quatro + multiswitch route, then all of your cables from the different rooms are going to need to end up at the LNB (up to a maximum of eight, obviously).

You would generally want something like WF100 for your satellite cable runs.

They've just stuck the cabling on one of the roof brackets. Essentially left loads of slack should I want to install anything.

I think it's standard coax (non satellite quality). Looked quite thick but will ask the builders tomorrow.

What is the multi switch route? I was planning on running loads of cable up to the loft and joining it there.

Have a look at something like a Loftbox

It's probably too late now to change the cabling so you may as well give it a go with what you have, it'll probably be OK albeit limited with recording if it only has one cable to each outlet.
You'll need to change the face plates from the standard Belling Lee type to F type
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

This is a good job and now is the time to do it! You can connect each room to the satellite dish. You'll need a Sky or Freesat box in each room. If you want recording, you'll need 2 cables to the room, or 'shotgun' cable (2 stuck together).
OR connect the Sky box in the living room. Maybe there's a 3rd RF cable in the LR? That would take the signal from RF OUT 1 on the Sky box, and you can watch that on TVs in other rooms via RF. Nowhere near as good quality as HD of course, but handy. Magic Eye allows you to control Sky box from that room.
OR install an aerial and use the Freeview built into each TV and connect the RFs to it. May need a distributor/amp.
