£1000 maximum not informed....

Hi
My garage has been burgled ten days from moving to new house. I transferred insurance across and told them things that were different such as having a garage. They didn't mention my maximum I would be able to claim would be a £1000, this I would never agreed to as I knew all Hubby's fishing stuff comes to about 5 grand. Anyway! It's all gone. I'm in the process of the claim for just under 4 thousand and the insurers havent told me yet I can only claim a thousand. Would they have told me by now?? And has anyone had experience of fighting as I haven't been sold insurance that was fit for my purpose have I??!

Thanks in advance

That would be for personal possessions. Is it the same as what it was before?

Were you sold it or did you buy it?
If sold, did you make the seller aware that there was £5k of fishing equipment that you wanted to be covered?

  • I never had a garage before but yes it was the same I think. When I moved I told them that I had a garage which I wanted to be insured and they didn't mention that there was a limit I thought contents were contents.....
I wasn't sold it as I already had it, but wasn't fully made aware that it no longer fitted my needs?

You were keeping £5k of fishing kit in a garage? !!
Garages aren't renowned for having the most secure of locking mechanisms, added to which I would have thought that £5k of fishing kit would need to be individually declared as separate items since there are probably £300+ items there.

I bet the insurance company didn't know you had it in a garage.

  • I've already submitted the claim and had the company ring to validate it all....
  • !!!!!!... Yes
We moved house and part of the reason to move was to have bikes and fishing gear in the garage. It's a brick garage that we thought was secure. But didn't bank on them taking the tiles off the roof. We didn't list it all seperate as the highest value item was £700 but there was a lot of it.

First you say you wouldn't have accepted a 1k limit if they'd told you, then you say they haven't told you yet that you can only claim 1k. So if they haven't told you, how do you know there is a limit??

Unfortunately, there is a limit for "theft from an outbuilding" on most policies - although £1,000 is quite low. This should be detailed in the policy documentation though.

If it's not in the documentation then you have a legitimate complaint - but if it is in there, then you've mis-bought rather than them mis-selling I'm afraid.

That bit confused me as well.

The limit would be stipulated in the policy booklet.

As you knew you kept more than £1k in the garage, did you not ask the insurers if there was a limit?

It is standard practice that there is a limit for theft from an outbuilding.
