Is Green Star's unlimited energy tariff any good? - new guide

According to the best tariffs, our monthly bill would be £120. When inputting the same annual consumption into Green Star for the "unlimited" tariff, our bill is £119. We will pay that once a month roughly 3 weeks in arrears. If Green Star live up to their offer, fine. If they don't, eg give us a month's notice of transfer to their variable tariff, then we transfer to the best deal then on the market within the month.
We are giving up the possibility of a refund after a mild winter, which means Green Star gain and we lose. They are carrying the risk of a cold winter which means we gain and they lose.
It's like opting for a fixed rate mortgage. You might win or lose compared to the variable rate depending on what happens to interest rates. But you've bought protection against an increase in what you pay for a fixed period.
With our figures, what have we got to lose?0 -
I joined last year from SEE dual fuel. Green star was about £150 cheaper for the projected year's cost but not cheapest overall. Yes you do have to provide monthly meter readings but that's not a hassle. I used the heating on the usual timer mostly but did have it on more often on colder days. They have just invited me to renew for another year on the Unlimited tariff again for £3 per month less than last year! Result! They're still not the cheapest on my usage, but not the most expensive either. Probably not for everybody, but fine for me. I'm retired on a fixed income so like the reassurance of knowing I can run my heating when I want without any nasty shocks.0
