Best and cheapest washer dryer

I have never bought a washer dryer before but my washing machine finally gave up tonight and I have decided I would like to look into a washer dryer.

Has anyone had a really good one that is reasonably cheap?

Do you have to have more/different piping than for a normal washing machine?

What are the drawbacks of washer dryers?

Thanks!

    Hi Tammy,

I'm currently working on a bit about washer dryers but the short of it is, don't buy one IMO. Dryer performance is terrible in general, especially on low cost ones.

There's also a contradiction in terms with the subject title. :)

The best you will get is a Miele in a washer dryer and they are pretty good, certainly a whole heap better than anything else, but expensive to put right when they fail and, expensive to buy. From memory they start at about £850.

For anything under the £500 mark, choose whatever as, frankly, they are all pretty much rubbish IMO. In general a washer dryer will break more, about a 30-40% higher breakdown rate. Some people get lucky with them but most people I've spoken to that have had one would never have another if they could avoid it.

They use the same plumbing as a washer.

  • I totally agree with the above. I bought a hoover washer dryer 4 years ago against the advice of my family (two of which had bad experiences with them). While it was still under warranty, an engineer had to come out many times (it was in the teens) and this was in the first few months. Only the washing machine part now works and this has been the case for at least the past two years. They are a complete waste of money, avoid at all costs!! I have no space for a dryer and thought this would be the answer, I was very much mistaken.
  • Sorry but I have to agree. I regretted buying one within months of having done so. For a start you cannot wash and dry a whole load! Not only did it not wash hold much washing nor dry very well it broke down regularly. Thankfully I bought an extended warranty so that was covered but it was a real pain. For a start you cannot wash and dry a whole load! I now keep my tumble dryer outside under my garden porch, though I use it as little as possible it is very handy in the winter. Do you have a garage?

Which Magazine advises to buy each separately but if you must...

  • Hi there. Can anyone please recommend a good washing machine and a dryer. thanks to the OP for listing the best washer and dryer from the "Which". Maybe you could give the list for the best washing machine and a dryer.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for your replies.

I really don't have room for separates.. I live in an upstairs maisonette with no garden. I have never had one before but just liked th idea of being able to dry my clothes in the summer without frying with the heat on!

Hmm - I may go back to just a washing machine then! It'll soon be winter anyway!

    Thanks again

Can you not put a dryer on top of the washing machine? I have and it works really well. I didn't buy one of those stacking kits, but rather bought a cheap white bathmat from tesco to put between the washer and dryer, and there is absolutely no movement.

I also second those who've said that washer/dryer combos are rubbish. I stayed in a rented house with one, and the dryer gets so hot it ruins your clothes. I didn't have maintenance costs, but it ruined so many clothes that it still cost money. After a week or so I never used the dryer bit.

I don't have the space for a separate dryer either so have had several washer/dryers. Had loads of problems with the Hotpoint models and the one Hoover I had , but the Bosch that I have had for a couple of years has been much better (touch wood!). Only had one breakdown and that was probably my own fault for not cleaning out the filter :o
