Excellent advice - thanks. Am going next weekend so no strike action planned. I'll be arriving in the dark so, despite my good intentions, will not be walking!
    Ta.

when you say next weekend do you mean sat 14th november?
    Part Closure - DLR

DOCKLANDS LIGHT RAILWAY: Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November, no service between West Ham and Canning Town and between Canning Town and Woolwich Arsenal. Please use local buses or the Jubilee line to complete your journey.
See our upgrade plan for the DLR?

the london city airport is on the Woolwich Arsenal to Canning Town line so no service from london city to canning town on saturday and sunday

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going down Friday so will be fine then, may take a taxi back to the airport on Sunday as it'll be dark when I head there.

on the sunday you could take the bus

    tfl.gov.uk/bus/timetable/473 bus

walk from your hotel to the Excel go through the Excel and walk to prince regent bus station which is very near the excel, catch the 473 bus towards woolwich ferry and that bus stops at the airport i think there is a bus every 15 minutes on a sunday evening

Thanks everyone. It was all so much easier than I expected. I did take a taxi from airport to ibis ( very grumpy driver who complained that he'd been sitting in the rank for four hours). Coming back yesterday I took the DLR and the rusty old overcrowded replacement bus from Canning Town. Upside was that the bus journey was FOC.

thanks for coming back to let us know how it went

the taxi driver was probably gutted at waiting four hours and losing his place on the rank for a five minute job

Yes, he was. Even rang his mate whilst driving to moan to him too. Made me feel both awful and annoyed at the same time! Then I decided 'them's the breaks'.
  • For future reference...

Bus spider map for London City Airport

Bus spider map for the Excel centre

Shows the route and bus stops for the route 473 bus.
