Best and cheapest washer dryer

I have never bought a washer dryer before but my washing machine finally gave up tonight and I have decided I would like to look into a washer dryer.

Has anyone had a really good one that is reasonably cheap?

Do you have to have more/different piping than for a normal washing machine?

What are the drawbacks of washer dryers?

Thanks!

Just a quick word of warning when you have a washer dryer there is more chance of it breaking and you lose two appliances, not just one. If you are stuck for space then you have no choice but if you can get separate appliances it is a better buy in the long run.
This pearl of wisdom was given to me by a Hotpoint repair man! Ditto Fridge/freezers more to go wrong. I deal with laundry at a school with the washers and dryers going all day everyday (well 38 weeks a year) machines are to my knowledge over 10 years old and still going strong.
My dryer at home which I try to rarely ever use (chronic rainy weather spring/autumn no heating ) I bought in Derby in 1982 when I lived on a flat with no garden! On my third washer though.

dont forget that most washer dryers only dry half the amount of clothes that they can wash in one go (ie. 6kg wash load means 3kg drying load), after saying that ive a few cos my kitchen is so small
