Is it worth opening one of these accounts, and for what length of time?

All a bit of a guess I'm afraid - I've been moving some savings into 3-5 year fixes and inflation-linked NS&I certs - will let you know in 3-5 years whether it was the right move...

My reasoning is that I think short-term rates may move up a bit then drop back to around where they are now for a few years (but 3 years will get me past the next election - I'm sure they'll try spiking rates up just before that - lol), and I can always cash the IL ones after a year if it doesn't go the way I expect.

As "they" say, your mileage may vary...

Once you've funded the ISA, it's a gamble as to whether RPI will be 4% or better over the next 3 years (assuming standard-rate tax). I'm hedging my bets I suppose - will el BankO drop rates and let inflation rip? I dunno either, but wouldn't be too surprised...

Unfortunately, the way things have panned out over the last few years it's been almost impossible to make any rational decisions, so you're left with "!!!!!! or bust" or "cover all bases".
