Npower electricity debt left by previous tenant, help!

We moved in the house more than a year ago. Both our electricity and gas is supplied by EOn with prepaid metre. And I think it was within the last half a year, we started seeing letters from npower but adressed to someone definitely not living here any more. We ignored at first until now we received a letter adressed to 'the occupier' and threatening to get a warrant of entry. I called them, saying we are not npower customer at all and the person who owe them money is not living here. But they were very sure they are still supplying our electricity. I called EOn and confirmed my metre serial number. It is bizarre. How can one house be supplied by two electricity company?!

It can't, although supplier's systems can make mistakes. Was npower supplying the property when you moved in (if they have the previous tenant's name), and then you switched away.

It might be worth writing back to npower, with your address and meter serial number to confirm that you are not on their supply.

I've seen enough where the address was similar and it has led to confusion, especially in older flats, so it is worth spelling things out in the simplest of terms for them.

Good morning Tia.g and welcome to the forum.

SwanJon has given some excellent info already, so thank you for this :D

Did we supply the property when you moved in? Or did you initiate a switch to us?

It sounds like you're doing the right things and checking the serial numbers, we can then check the national database as this will show the correct supplier.

It is possible for mix ups to happen with flats or plot addresses etc

I'd also just double check what date Npower are saying they were the supplier.

But do speak to us and we'll be able to help provide all the info that you need to get this resolved.

    Helena :)

Thanks a lot for the information.

When we moved in the house, it was already with EOn. I don't have any idea when the landlord changed the metre. I was trying to call npower, but the answering machine always led me to a team unable to help. It is so annoying.

    I'll figure it out. Thanks!

    I see, thank you :D

Sounds like an outstanding balance from previous occupiers, before the change of supply to us.

We can give dates, meter serial numbers etc, from the national database for you to have for info if that makes it easier for Npower, they also have a rep on here that pops on occasionally.

Let's hope they see this :)

Also, our building is a bit complicated as well. It had Flat A, B, and C before, then the landlord refurbished it and turned the flats into 1-7. My flat used to be B and now 3. When I called npower yesterday, the agent was confused and being confusing himself as well whether it's flat 3 or C. Shall I just write to npower and show them a copy of my EOn bill, picture of the metre and our tenancy contract? But which team / department shall I write to?

n'powers systems are in a total mess. so don't rely on a phone call to sort thing out
WRITE to n'power, sending them photocopy evidence that Eon were the suppler when you moved into house:
    1) The Welcome letter Eon would have sent you when you registered your occupancy with them
    2) A copy of your 1st Council Tax Bill that shows the date that they started charging you

It's been more than a year. I can't find the 1st council tax bill. Is there anything else I can use?

Your tenancy agreement & any eon bills for the period & a letter stating the facts as you know them should be sufficient.

Ultimately, if Npower wish to pursue this it is for them to prove that you do owe them money, not you to prove that you don't.

    Hi Vicky,
I couldn't see an email address in your profile (I'm quite new to the forum and not familiar with the functions). But anyway, I sent an email to npower complaint team not long ago, so hopefully can hear back some good news. If I can't solve the problem I will ask you for help. Thanks a lot in advance.
