Velux windows

When we moved into our house we noticed that the wooden part of the Velux windows in the attic room had black mould on it, obviously because of condensation. It looks like they've never had varnish on them. I've bought a maintenance and repair kit, but don't want to varnish them until I can get rid of the black. Does anyone know how I can treat this? If it won't come off would it be ok to just paint the frames?

Use diluted bleach to kill the mould, then you can paint/varnish over once it's dry.

Velux rooflights were usually treated with a clear matt/satin lacquer and if the mould has got under the lacquer you won't get rid of the staining , it may well have penetrated deep into the grain.

Have you considered painting it as suggested?.

It looks and feels like there isn't any lacquer on it. Does it wear off? It's possible that's what's happened. I'll start off by sanding them, and someone on the Old Style forum suggested using HG Mould spray, so I'll try that if sanding doesn't work. If all else fails and it still looks awful I'll paint them.
