Adding a foreign spouse to Barclays account

Hello, Can anyone give me some real advice -
I want to add my husband to my Barclays current account.
My residential address is in the UK, however my husband's domicile is in Belgium. On the phone barclays customer service assures me that if we both come into a bank branch and my husband brings proof of his address and ID this will be possible. However online I have read about people having problems.
Has anyone had experience adding a spouse with a foreign address to a UK account?
Thanks
