Apple .. multiple login attempts .. email ??

I have just received this email, which looks like it's from Apple

I don't have an Apple phone, but my wife and son do. They used to use my computer for their itunes (well .. son did)

This is probably a scam ... is it ?

Here are the exact words of the email.

('iffy' grammar and spelling mistakes included too)

Dear , This email confirms that multiple account login attempts has been presented to our servers from your apple account () in different locations within a short period.
Please be advised Apple accounts are not to be shared for this reason access to your account has been blocked pending verification.
Please review the below information regarding the recent login attempts, if you dont recognize this actions you need to take action immediately to prevent any inconviences.

That will be a scam email.

They want you to follow the link, put in your account details to 'verify' the account and then use the log in details you have given them to access your account.

Did YOUR email address ever get associated with an Apple account?

Does it refer to you by name?

When you mouse over the link in the email does it point to a website that does not end with apple.com?

Best way to check these types of things is to go to the site directly without clicking via the email.

The email claims that your iTunes account is blocked, so head on over to the Apple website and attempt to sign in.

If it lets you sign in without any issue then your know the email is rubbish. If the email were genuine and you can't sign in, then you can phone or email Apple via the contact details on their website and know for definite that you are talking to the right people.

Yes , link starts with http://www.iforgot.appleid.com/loginDetail.htm?rcpt then has a group of numbers / letters

That's not the link actually, it's what you see and what is written inside the href tag. It can be anything.

If you hover over it with your mouse, you will see where the link really goes normally. The problem is, that this can be changed with javascript. So if you use webmail with a browser with javascript enabled, the link you see on mouseover could be not the real link. It's safer to use a email client like Thunderbird (don't know about Outlook), where no javascript exists. When you hover over it in Thunderbird, then you will see the real link. If you use a browser, then you should copy the link and paste it in the address bar manually to see where the link goes.

Well that link doesn't have apple.com in it so no.

Definitely a scam email; I've had these types of emails to a couple of Gmail addresses I use but have never had linked to my Apple ID.

And the URL should be something like appleid.apple.com
