IE wants to open TWO tabs... why?

Great, now IE for no obvious reason and unprovoked has started opening two tabs on startup.

I don't want a second tab and, of course, it's slowing things down.

Why is it doing this and what can I do to stop it?

  • Go into Tools, then Internet Options, and see if you have two different pages listed in the Home Page Box.

If you have, delete the unwanted one and you should be back to one Tab.

an extra tab + running slow suggests something malicious to me.
I would recommend a scan with malwarebytes to start with

Is there actually anything in the second tab or is it just the 'New Tab' facility?

It's two copies of my set homepage. I can delete the extra one, for sure... just by using the X... but then whenever I return to the homepage from wherever I'm browsing, a second identical tab comes up.

    Frustrating.

I'd also ditch IE. You'll notice an improvement by going to Chrome or Firefox
  • As aliEnRIK said, it sounds like it's malicious, especially if it's opening up the same tab even when you close it. You should run a scan.

But I would recommend using Google Chrome instead.
