mortgage insurance

my first mortgage was taken out in 1995 and with it i took out a insurance which would cover my mortgage if i was injured or have some illness and was unable to pay my mortgage.
in late 2001 i paid my mortgage off and i informed the insurance that i wanted to cancel my policy and this happend payments stopped.
my wife took out a insurance policy in 2002 and i thought the payment that have been coming out of my bank account was my wifes cover but i have found out that the payments coming out was this mortgage cover.
i have been paying for 14yrs into a policy that was no use to me infact i left the property back in 2003.
i have been to the bank in question and they can confirm that payments were still coming out in 2005 but they could not go back any further.
the insurance at some point changed from who i was originally with to another insurance company and when i phoned them they had my previous address and details so i had no knowledge of the changeover but they have said they will look into it.
is there anything else i can do to try and get my money back what i have paid in?

You are totally reliant on the goodwill of the insurer. Unless you can show that you cancelled the direct debit and informed the insurer, then it just looks like a try-it-on refund.

You can complain. If you have evidence showing that you requested that the policy be cancelled, then this will help. If you do not, then you rely on either the business or (if you refer the complaint) the Financial Ombudsman Service believing you.

One thing to consider - did you go on to take a mortgage with a different provider in 2001 or after this date? If you did, the policy you had from 1995 may well have provided cover for this new mortgage.
  • The problem i have the bank do not have statements going that far back even though the payments did stop and no i did not go with another provider i paid my mortgage up.
The insurance i had the value declined as i paid my mortgage.
i have been told to try DSAR UNIT apparently they keep information about you and your bank, anyone used these before

A SAR is an information request you make to the bank itself. See the sticky on his forum for a template.
