  • I tried to have one installed.
Received letter to apply - applied. Was asked where current meter was and as it was above door height it would take two fitters as opposed to one and now I'm at the back of the queue!!

Does anyone know what mobile network the EON smart meters use?
WHere I live the only network signal that stands a chance is O2, although I am not optimistic about it getting a signal under the stairs even on that network. I have an appointment booked in a week or so, so want to figure out if there is a chance that they will fit it or not.

    Hiya indesisiv,

I've had a word with some smart people! :o Yes it's O2 that's the network for our smart meters.

    Hope this helps.

  • We have had our smart meter for some weeks and the ability to read (almost) instantaneously what we are using is a good guide to if our solar panels are generating enough to cover our usage or not.

The meter was installed by OVO at there request in mid 2014, because a meter reader suspected there was something wrong with the meter wiring connection. I was given a choice, but seleted the Smart Meter over the conventional meter, all the hype said it would save money and time for me and the Energy Supplier and cost me less in the future.
OVO never actually used the meter, I was still giving manual readings when I left OVO a few months after the installatiion for E.on in a switch to save money.
Despite informing E.on about the Smart Meter, no attempt was made to use the meter in a wireless connection. In fact the meter readers who attended frequently to check my manuall readings could'nt understand the meter and I had to read the Smart Meter manually for them. One of the meter readers stated ''it wasn't the same make as theirs so it would'nt work for them.
Yesterday I transfered back to OVO in an attempt to once again save money on my electricty bill.
So I await with baited breath to see if OVO can connect this time to the Smart Meter they installed.

We are being encouraged rigourously to transfer our untility bills to save money, however there appears to be no co-ordination between engery suppliers and the manufacturers/installers of Smart Meters to enable them to talk to their respective energy supplier and in turn the customer.
Another waste of money by the Government: no planning, co-ordination or reveiw of the entire process.

    Hi mgcornwall

I'm sorry our meter readers struggled to read your meter. To be honest, I don't know why this should've been the case.

At the moment, meters fitted by other suppliers revert to a conventional type when accounts switch to us. They lose many of their smart features including the ability to take readings remotely. It's a problem we and the other suppliers are working to fix. We're looking to use a centralised data communications company so a change of supplier won't have an impact on the smart features of these new meters. Not sure when this will be though.

Sorry again you had to read the meters for our representatives.

My OVO smart meter was smart until I joined the Cheap Energy Club, joined E.ON - now I can't get any readings so asked the question E.ON can't seem to answer yet

    Hi Norman Meyer

Hope my reply to mgcornwall above (post 75) explains how meters fitted by other companies lose some of their smart features following a change of supplier. As I say, we're working to fix this but until then we'll be happy to look to see if you're okay to have one of our Smart Meters.

We're currently installing them in many parts of the country. It depends on things like the region, strength of the mobile phone signal and the current metering set up. There's no charge and you'll need to register an interest. You can do this through our website and one of our dedicated smart meter specialists will be in touch to let you know. There's more information on our website, too, including stuff about the Energy Display that comes with them. These keep track of the usage and can be used together with the 'Saving Energy' tools/information on the website to help save money by saving energy.

Hope this is of interest Norman Meyer. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

  • British Gas told me they were going to change my current meter for a 'Smart' one - didn't offer me the choice. Although they were my provider at the time, they said it was a Government scheme. Then they cancelled saying that because of my solar panels there were problems with the meters, and they would be in touch idc. Have heard no more, and have since changed providers. Have also since heard that some people are refusing these meters on account of microwave radiation, and that there is no compulsion to have one fitted, so on yer bike !

Here is a good example to show how the UK MPs messed up giving anyone the right to refuse a smart meter. Its a pity they did nt have the courage of France, Italy, Spain and many other European countries who sensibly made them compulsory . Now the Lib/Dems have nearly all gone maybe its time to have another vote.
Smart meters use extremely low levels of radio waves and are quiet for 98% of the time anyway with no evidence of any harm to anyone. Your laptop, mobile, radio, telly, wireless landline phone , smart tv etc are all pushing out radio waves also, so are you getting rid of them ?. and be careful next time you clamp your mobile right next to your brain for half an hour , because according to what you have "heard " ,you will have microwave oven waves pulsing through your skull.
The suppliers and distributors want them installed so why can t people go along with it without all these silly excuses to refuse one. The same people will be up in arms when they get billed £60 a year metering costs for their belligerence.
  • Had smart meters for gas and electricity installed by British Gas on 5th on 6th checked display on handset and electricity meter nothing. Phone BG re concerned about not being able to see credit details or emergency credit details gave us £10 as a gesture of goodwill want us to top up with them every week and they will tell us how much we have used can't fit new meter until 7th Dec. Complained been told to run gas down till only £2.00 left and they will send Engineer out but will probably replace with old meters then set a date for instillation of smart meters. Been ongoing now since Thursday Gentleman has been very helpful but keeps telling us Meter and Handset must be faulty unfortunately it's usually one or the other but yours is a double whammy!!!!
  • Just ahd my smart meter installed by OVO, however, since I was stung three years ago by EON not taking readings, I now monitor my readings monthly and want to continue that. I understood that the In house display unit would allow me to do that and was disappointed to find it did not.

Does anyone know if there is a way to take readings using some sort of inhouse device or by my browser?

The gas is the most difficult as I have to move one of our cars to get to the meter.
