I like to stay at hotels within the old canal ring as it's very picturesque.

Last time we went we stayed in Harlem, a quiet area a few km away with good frequent trams to centre of town.
  • Heineken museum is great - I seem to recall it cheap to get in and you get a few free beers on the way round too!

Can't add to much more anyone else has said. It's a lovely city and great to just stroll around.
  • Another vote for the Heineken museum, canal boat trip, Rijksmuseum

    and these

I always stay in the Ibis Amsterdam centre stoppera - it's by Waterlooplein, takes about 15 mins to walk to the centre down some interesting shopping streets (or subway if you're feeling lazy) is very quiet at night and is by a supermarket for snacks and drinks.

18euro each - one free drink within tour another at the end using a wristband with buttons on which they are supposed to take off but they never asked me!:D

You can skip the queues if you buy Anne Frank tickets in advance

Walking tours are a good way to get your bearings and see things of interest - the 'free' one is not bad (works on tips - pay what you like), but they do try to sell you tickets for the other tours and it gets a bit boring after a while.

If you go to the Rijksmuseum then it's worth a 10/15 minute walk up the road for grub at De FoodHallen

Noordermarkt on Saturdays is worth a look

Mind the bikes! Most of the big roads have cycle roads running at the side, which can be confused for pavements.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!
