Offered a job but never heard back

I am a full time student but I've been offered some part time bank work (secretarial/admin) at a large private hospital group.
I passed the interview and took in my all documents for them to photocopy, signed a contract, gave them referee details and even paid £13 for a criminal records check (I had a DBS check done for my uni place and you can pay to keep it updated online to save time and new employers carrying out another check).
That was two weeks ago. I have emailed twice to see if I have a start date and telephoned but the HR person doesn't seem to have a voicemail activated so their phone just rings and rings.
Just wondering if anybody has any advice?

Depending on the organisation, it can take 1 - 6 weeks for a DBS check to come back.
I had 2 done this year. 1 was for a care home and took 3 weeks from forms going in to DBS being recieved. 1 was for my role in Scouting. This took 6 days from forms being submitted to DBS being received.
If the firm is local to you, why not drop in and speak to them in person?.Never Knowingly Understood.

As it's bank work you may not hear anything until they need you. Or perhaps the HR person is on holiday?0

My DBS check has already been done and I don't think the person is out of office because they didn't have an auto reply set up on their Outlook.
The hiring manager said she wanted me to start as soon as possible at interview as they have a backlog of work. It's just frustrating and this seems to be a common theme with hospitals!0 -
Is there a generic customer number you could call? They might be able to put you through to someone who knows!0

Never heard back...bloody cheek!
Same happened with another private hospital bank. Passed interview, passed DBS check and references all came back. Emailed the lady my availability and rang up to chase - got voicemail. Is a simple "thanks, I've received your availability, we'll be in touch when we have work" too much to ask?
Think I shall stick with NHS bank work....0 -
are you sure this is legit and not a scam?0

have you tried the main reception number and asking them to transfer you to their depart or you could try changing the last digit to see if you can get through to a colleague of theirs. My Signature is MY OWN!!0

They may have forgotten to set up auto reply (or maybe just don't know to use it/how to use it).
It seems odd that two legit companies would go through all that time, effort and cost and then just not call you.
Are you sure the references are good?0
