Removing Default - Urgent Advise Needed!

Hi there!

Im hoping someone can help me. I need to get a Credit Card to build up my credit rating for hopefully applying for a mortgage in the future.

My application has been rejected twice now. I have received a credit report from Experian and it turns out I have a default on there from Vodafone for £236 which I knew nothing about, this would have been when I went travelling to Australia as a student 6 years ago!

Im now a working professional with a good salary, always paying my bills on time! It sucks big time that this default is what is causing the rejection from Credit card companies.

I am at a loss what to do - I need a credit card to build my credit rating but I wont get approval until the default is removed. Please help! :)

Thanks

Becky

6 years ago? So what is the date of the initial default?

The default and defaulted account will be removed 6 years from that date.

  • As above- a default will drop off your credit file automatically after six years. If it's less than that, you won't be able to get it removed unless they applied the default incorrectly. If it's money you owed and never paid, then the default is technically accurate.

Did you ever have a contract with Vodafone? did you cancel before you went travelling and pay a final bill?

If its coming up for 6 years then as above it will drop off 6 years from the default date.

    Hi Relston, welcome to MSE.

I agree with the other posters - you need to check the default date. If this default is very close to coming off your file then other things might be affecting your score. For example, several searches for credit and no credit being issued can be negative. Are you on the electoral role - if you're not then this can be damaging to your score. Are you financially associated with anyone you don't want to be? If you had joint credit in the past but didn't disassociate with this person through the credit agencies this can also damage your rating.

    Hope you get it sorted,
