Leading Czech music ensemble the Prague Symphony Orchestra return to the City Hall for a concert including works by two of the country’s greatest composers, Smetana and Dvorak, and conducted by one of its most versatile artists, Jan Kučera.
The programme opens with ‘Sarka’ from Ma Vlast, the third in Smetana’s set of six symphonic poems dedicated to his homeland and named for the eponymous female warrior, who was a central figure in the Czech legend of the Maidens’ War.
Dvorak’s Symphony No.8, which contrasts to both the composer’s own symphonies and those of the period in its cheery and optimistic tone, brings the concert to a triumphant close.
