First of all, you will need a formula which takes into account the fact that different months have differing numbers of days. I use this one for timesheets:

    =IF(A7<>"",IF(MONTH($A$7)=MONTH(A7+1),A7+1,""),"")

Where A7 is simply the first day in the month.

ps this is my humdinger of a formula, my very favourite!

  • If you put all your bank transactions into a sheet, it's simple to calculate the balance - even to display in a graph. It also helps to identify possible errors in your statements. Start with columns matching your bank statement, then add columns to categorise expenses, e.g. 'wages', 'other income', 'utilities', 'food', etc, and you can easily calculate subtotals - monthly, quarterly or yearly. (use 'subtotal' function, so not included twice).

Try budgeting app like http://www.moneymanagerex.org - it's supposed to support budget forecasting, though I've not tried that feature out.
