O/S Daily Thread Thursday 29 October 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning everyone

HH – what an awful situation for your hubby and yourself to be in the middle of with BIL’s – hugs x

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.

DH up and now gone to work. DS1 now getting ready for work. DS2 still in his pit, it’s half term here, so will wake him in a bit.

Now getting light, damp seems to be hanging in the air but not particularly cold.
Dinner last night was chicken and bacon in a white wine sauce served with rice, all eaten and enjoyed. Tonight’s dinner is scampi and chips (for the menfolk), I’ll be having fish and jacket potato with veg.

Work yesterday was very quiet – but not surprising really as it started raining and was really heavy rain for quite a long time and it was dark and nasty. Towards the end of the morning it did stop raining and eventually brighten up – but not a nice day at all – very dreich. Once I left work I went to the bathroom suppliers and they had got the new part for the shower (under guarantee so no cost to us, but we will have to pay to get the part fitted) Plumber is coming next week to fit said part. I also managed to make a couple of phone calls and do some work on pc and some other household admin – so have managed to cross those jobs off the list.

Today I’m taking DS2 back to Drs for his scan results from last week – but radiologist told him at the time that “everything looks good” so possibly not the problem the Dr thought so not sure where we go from here. I’ll be cracking on with the usual chores that need doing today – so will just potter along, I do need to get everything done though as I’m working Sat morning so have limited time at the weekend. DH has some jobs he wants to get done at the weekend too, so I’m hopeful that whilst I’m at work Sat he’s cracking on with those.

Keep safe and well x

  • Morning one and all. All calm outside after what got thrown at us yesterday! The drive over to the van was in and out of fog, alternated with torrential rain. The drive over the Blubberhouses was horrendous with visibility just about nil.

Yesterday went to plan (for once!) and we got the car stuffed full of our things from the caravan and then the contents of the awning stored inside the caravan. My poor caravan, it looked like Steptoe's yard when we left! (The drawback of having 3 DGDs with their many outdoor toys using it too!!)The awning is now empty, with the carpet up as a bonus. DS is going over with us on Sunday to help take the awning down, cover the flooring with waterproof sheeting and then put the caravan its coat on for winter. Whether next season it will get more use depends on the outcome of Mr TA's new treatment.

We've still got the car to empty. We were so weary when we got back it just got put in the garage stuffed full! The only thing I brought in was the big box of store cupboard items. If my cupboards weren't groaning before then they certainly are now! I don't think I need to buy another tin of anything all winter!!

After emptying the car we'll just have time for a bit of feet up time before the DGDs descend for tea and sleepover. No rest for the wicked! I'll have a rummage through the freezers to see what today's meals will be. Though Mr TA has already said he has a right longing for some mackerel and I know there is some in there somewhere. It's something he used to eat a lot of but, this summer, when he was really under par, it was one of the many things he just went off eating.

Have a good day all (((((HUGS))))) if needed/wanted. Good luck today HESTER in your battle with the BIL's from hell. Take care xxxx

    Morning everyone.

It's been pouring down here all night and still going strong. Just horrible. There was light rain for most of the day but then got worse in the evening.

The teaching session was good, a new group who knew very little about computing. The room arrangement wasn't too good so I'll change it next week. On the way home I picked up a Chinese takeaway. There was no housework done at all.

Strangely I felt really tired out in the early evening and went to bed at 7pm, didn't watch any TV. As soon as my head hit the pillow I was asleep and only woke 10 mins ago. Weird!

I'm meant to be going down to Glasgow to collect new curtains (again) and have a dental appointment - think I'll stay here instead. I worry about getting diverted the long way if the Rest is blocked. I'll wait til eight o'clock to see what happens and check online for road problems.

So,my day is as fluid as the blooming rain.

I hope everyone has a good day.

    Morning :hello:

camelot Thanks for the lead idea. I'm also considering a Halti I'm not keen only because I want Scampi to actually listen to me rather than be made to do something but I don't think that's going to happen, lol.

redruby Have you heard how Noodles got on with the behaviourist?

I threw myself into stretching exercises with a bit too much enthusiasm, I ache all over :D I'm tempted to have a day off but I won't. I'm going to speed through the housework, have a coffee, go out for a walk, then have a good stretching session when I get back.

I have nothing to do this afternoon so I'm hoping to get creative. I don't have anything in mind but sometimes I get all my supplies out and an idea pops into my head, I really hope that happens today because I want to do something new. If not, I'll go back to the baby blankets.

Thanks for starting the thread nmlc & for your kind thoughts. Also thank you to everyone for your kindness.

I managed to sleep until 5:30 so I feel much rested & I've folded some washing ready to put away.

Hubby has a Dr's appointment this morning about his labyrinthitis, but he is feeling much better.

He should be going to work today unless he gets another call from the hospital, we will visit MIL on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, not sure about next week yet.

MIL's last scan shows the cancer has spread to her bowel, spine & lymph nodes, she also has septicemia and her kidneys have shut down, the staff dropped her again Tuesday and the drainage tubes draining her kidneys were pulled out.

The Dr spent time yesterday checking that she was still lucid and despite thinking she was in Scotland to start with the Dr decided that she was coherent enough to make her own decisions.

It was explained to MIL that she had a choice, she could have the drainage tubes replaced and wait for the cancer to kill her which would take a few weeks, or she could choose to not have them replaced and let the kidney failure kill her which would take only a few days.

She has chosen not to have the tubes replaced, so she will not last long now, if a bed becomes free in time she will be moved to a local hospice.

BIL2, as usual was full of bluster, waving around bits of paper, a living will, POA etc, but the hospital have a more recent living will & the Dr believes MIL is capable of making her own decisions.

FIL is seeking solace in the bottom of a bottle & is frequently more confused than MIL, BIL2 hates FIL as he is stepdad, MIL's husband died in his 40's leaving her with 4 sons.

BIL3 is abroad on holiday with his GF they have fallen out and are keeping up a booze fuelled argument on FB, we aren't telling him about MIL as he is too far away to get home quickly so decided he didn't want to be updated until he returns.

My hubby & BIL4 are bearing the brunt of supporting FIL and fending off BIL2, fortunately BIL4 has a solicitor who he uses for all his business needs and she has been very helpful, we offered money towards any fees BIL4 would incur but as BIL spends £££££ with this solicitor the current advice is classed as free advice.

BIL4 showed us photo's of his latest development, he bought an old office block that had originally been a big posh house, he has returned it how it was and turned it in to apartments & they look beautiful.

I think I'e rambled on enough now, it's time I took hubby another cuppa.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hugs Hester

Very wet outside but it didn't keep me awake, I actually slept very well for a change, must be something to do with feeling good when I go to bed at crossing things off my diary list!

Started to alter the hall curtains last night, the ones from the door have been shortened to fit the window and I will turn up the new ones for the door over the weekend.

The painter is coming today to do the hall, etc, I'm actually quite excited!

Hugs to all that need them, must dash. Take care. XX

    Good morning everyone :hello:

I'm sneaking 10 minutes on here while my grandson is absorbed in Peppa Pig. He and his sister are staying with us for 3 days and it's like a whirlwind has hit the house :D. My eldest is in the process of starting a new job and working her notice on her last job so I am helping out with childcare for her until she knows what rota she will be on. The kids are having a lovely time, my daughters are keeping them occupied but they are all still in bed for the moment so it's just me and my little buddy :rotfl:. ...and Peppa of course.

I was hoping to get some knitting done this morning so I'll see if it's worth the stress of having my grandson 'helping' me by holding the wool. I remember 'helping' my mum at his age in the same way but luckily she was very patient. DD14 is desperate for me to set up the
sewing machine this afternoon so she can have a go on it but I don't think it will be practical while the grandchildren are staying so she will have to hold fire for a few days.

HH, I think you ought to bang your BIL's heads together. I hope you can manage to sort them out during your meeting and it goes well.

We have a bit of rain here this morning but nothing compared to some of you by the sound of it. If it brightens up later I will see if the girls will take the kids to the park to let out some of their energy.

Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

Good Morning all,we had a great day in London yesterday .The BBC tour was really good and well worth going to.
We walked down Oxford Street and there was a group that my DGS knew from the Tv (I hadn't heard of, but then I never watch talent shows anyway ) called Little Mix, they were doing a promotion in Boots windows for Children in Need.So the kids took some photos.
DD treated us all to lunch in Byron's a burger place also I'd never heard of either ,but as I am not a burger person I had a chicken breast in a bun instead.
Good stroll around the west end people watching then home by tea time, just missed the rush hour by about half an hour which was good.
Today I am taking DGS Henry to the orthodontist for his check up this afternoon.Apart from that just mainly pootling about.Tomorrow we are going to Eltham Palace as the boys like to carve their pumpkins there.
I popped up to see DGD Holly as her Mum and Dad are away in the US and she has been busy .She decided to redecorate her bedroom and so far has done a really good job of it.she has stripped all the walls and sanded them smooth and repainted two of them already.I am really proud of her as she's never picked up a brush in her life and certainly never decorated anything. She is off as its half term but as apparently because she works at an academy she has two weeks off at half term instead of one so she is really getting some 'down-time' from the school children.
Right time to get the kettle on I think
    have a good day everyone

Morning all, up since 4 (not sure if clock change or awful sleeping pattern ) have been reading and knitting. I will work late today so have decided not to go to the office before my first meeting. Weather report not good enough to risk putting washing out, would like a weather report that was more specifically geared to laundry, it could read 'go for it, you might be lucky or don't be daft'. Family left half the lights on after I went to bed, so the electricity bill will be fun. One huge bonus of working late is that I can make my own dinner without meat. They are very carnivorous and I don't really expect the mister to make me a special meal. I tasted what he made last night (chili con carne in wraps) and am sure it was perfectly nice but not for me so he got my share. Am too fat anyway, it won't do me any harm to miss a meal.
Must have a shower and think about getting organised.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

    Morning everyone,

After yesterday's torrential rain it's clear and bright this morning, got out with the girls just as the sun was rising, beautiful and not that cold.
My mechanical friends could not find any evidence of mice damage underneath when they looked at my car yesterday but did say it looked like they had nibbled some of the foam covering pipes in the engine. My battery also failed a charge test, knew had a problem as have had to jumpstart twice in the last week so makes sense, mechanic did say that it was the original one put on by the manufacturer so is eleven years old, think have had monies worth as was new to me six years ago.
Off to the yard this morning to ride my horse then this afternoon off to see DM, check her garden as having repercussions following last weeks sewage problem, then taking her over to my DB's as she is "babysitting " whilst they go away, my N and N are 17 &15, think DB wants to make sure no parties more than anything :rotfl:
Anyways, time to get on, hope everyone has a good day x

Grey and dismal morning and still have damp rained on washing outside  I will rescue it later and rewash it but not dashing round to do it.

I went to slimming class last night and have lost two and a half pounds so only one more pound to lose for a stone off :j

I got some good YS stuff yesterday - sliced leek and cabbage for 39 pence and small pots of fruit for 29 pence. Plan to make a chicken and veg soup for later and have middle dd coming for a meal tonight so will have a look at my new cookery books for something different to try.

I don't want to fall into the trap of having the same meals over and over as that gets boring and makes me crave sweets etc. I found out that one marshmallow has one syn last night and I used to eat a lot more ages ago as I thought they were low fat and better than chocolate etc.

Another dd has ordered something to be delivered here so want to stay downstairs so I don't miss the delivery.

    Hugs to all
