  • This is the link to the image of the bumper. (I cropped out the number plate).

If there is anything at all, there's a tiny mark towards bottom left but it looked painted over and not like a fresh mark when I examined it. Certainly no dents or anything like that.
I should have thought about switching on the front lights to take a better image in the dark.

I see there are sensors on the bumper, did you check the number plate light holders?
I had a low impact shunt to the rear of a car, the quote included removal of the bumper and components, respray of the replacement bumper re-assembly. To my untrained eye it didn't look much but the next morning at the bodyshop the true damage was revealed.
£2k and that's without hire car and PI claim (which I didn't go for) .
So, send the cheque to his insurance as you are onto a bargain at that price. Your policy will show claim fully recovered or similar.

"Your policy will show claim fully recovered or similar."

How does this work? Do you mean I have to notify his & mine insurance?
I believe once I do this, both our premiums go up and the reason he accepted my offer is so that it can be done privately.

Incidentally, the impact was not a 'low impact', it was barely a touch at all. He knows that. And he also knows that I know that he knows that. The whole thing is just a charade.

Your policy terms indicate that you should notify the underwriters perhaps via the broker as soon as possible. Even if you don't the other party may do so.
The premiums may not go up at all, that is an old wives tale.
As said it maybe low speed but you have a heavy mass impacting with plastic and paint.
When the guy hit me, he wanted to go private until he saw the quote.
The whole thing maybe a charade, in future though you know it could have easily have been avoided by being aware of the hazard in front and just leaving that little bit more space ahead of you.

I don't know how old his car is, but the pics do not suggest it's an old wreck, if it were my car I would want it to be restored to the condition prior to the impact.

Why is it when someone runs into another vehicle they expert the other party incur lots of inconvenience and have their car repaired at some cheap back street repair garage.

You ran into a very expensive Mercedes, not exactly a crash for cash scam.
If you don't want to be "RIPPED OFF" pay attention to you driving and leave mobile phones, stereos etc alone.

You do not need to contact his insurer (nor send them any money).

You breach your policy conditions by not informing your insurer of the incident - that is your call.

But throughout you have expressed concerns over the third party and now refer to this whole thing as a "charade".

You will end the charade by withdrawing your offer, informing your insurer of the incident, and telling the third party that they must deal with the insurers over this.

That way should he actually make a claim your insurer will handle the matter so that no future claims land on you.

(As mentioned in #15 if your insurer does have to pay out a small sum and it is cost effective for you then you can get your lost NCD reinstated by reimbursing them)

A few years ago the wind blew my door into the Golf parked next to me. There was quite a bit of damage to the paint, but no dents to the door. Left my details, she got in touch and I gave her my insurance details (I'd already advised them). She wanted to settle privately, so she went and got a quote from VW - they wanted £300 +VAT. Fair enough, and I'd want my car back to how it was before. But there was no way I could afford that amount of money - I'm happy to hold my hands up and say I did it, but I just couldn't afford it at the time.

Strangely enough, once I told her this she went to a chips away kind of place and got it sorted for £94. She complained it wasn't perfect 'but it'll do'. Still, I hold the view that she could have gone to VW and she could have had a 'perfect' repair - just one phone call to the insurance....

I sent payment to her and a letter something along the lines of - Further to the recent damage to your car on [date], please find attached a cheque as full and final payment for the repairs.

Personally - and this is only my view - I would get the insurers involved. It might only be £450 (or reduced to £200 now), but what about the widget that falls off three weeks down the line due to accident damage. Or, as mentioned earlier, the damage that can't be seen, but which becomes apparent once the bumper is removed. Or the personal injury claim....'you know, my neck is a bit sore.....'.

you ran into the back of an S class merc which is a car that has a sixty seven thousand pound starting price and you think he is trying to con you out of a couple of hundred quid?

I underestimated if it was a 500 S class coupe then a new one will cost ninety five grand
