Confusion with who pays what!!

  • We had a similar issue when we first moved in together, our rent came out middle of the month so my poor OH thought he had more money than he did, so now everything comes out of the joint account except food which we pay week about.

We've just moved in together for first time and have had similar issue. We were splitting everything in half but because one earns much more than the other, we've decided to pool all our income and pay everythin out of it.

One earns almost double the other so in that respect, one might feel like they're contibuting so much more but we are in a partnership after all and if we can't do this together then what's the point (in our opinion).

We pay all bills out of the joint money, whatever they may be. Then any money left over, after savings, we split in half for each of us to have our own "monthly allowance" - money to spend/save as that person wants, without having to justify where it's gone. It's particularly useful to put towards b/day/christmas pressies for each other so OH doesn't know what's been spent on them, and meals out with the girls!

This idea was recommended to me by piglet6 and it works for us!

  • Thanks for all of your advise. It just gets a little confusing as we both get paid weekly but we can work around that!

I think if we sit down tonight and work out who gets paid what and what comes out of whos account then we can get through it.

Is it easy enough to call companies and have the account details changed so that the DD comes out of the joint account?

The biggest thing is to be clear about what comes out of the joint account. Issues for us were car costs (insurance etc) petrol and wine particularly. But it might be different for you. There are also all the bits and bobs you might throw in with the shopping that are personal care items - hairspray or shaving stuff or whatever. Either it is included or it isn't..

Doesn't really matter what agreement you come to as long as you're both happy with it.

You can call most companies and they'll accept change of DD over phone, providing u r account holder.

Either just make one account or use the joint account for the shopping. You're both eating it so both can pay for it. Messing about like that with 3 accounts would do my head in too :D

  • Let see, well, we're engaged and living together.. so I pay:

    Mortgage
    Sky
    Phone
    Broadband
    Water
    Electric
    Gas

    She pays:
    Car payments (inc insurance)
    Council Tax
    Food shopping
    Holiday savings

It's roughly equal, i think i pay a bit more than her, but hey, it all needs paying in the end. and as long as I'm not skint it doesn't matter who does it. One day we'll get a joint account and do it properly.

Why don't you both put more into the joint account and have ALL bills coming out of there - inc. food bills. That way it's all split down the
    - it's how I plan to organise it when I get round to it
