probably two issues going on here:-

    1. no restore points often indicates a malware infection, adwcleaner and malwarebytes as starting points

    2. no sound device - can be malware, but also in control panel > sound and make sure the lappy speakers are selected and set as the output device, then you may well need to fiddle with the speaker properties to get them back online.

When this happened with my old Dell desktop (onboard sound) nothing would restore the sound. Had to be a motherboard fault. I installed a cheap second-hand Creative sound card and solved the problem that way. Obviously you can't do that with a laptop, but there are cheap USB sound devices that will allow inputs and outputs. Plenty on Amazon or eBay. Good luck.

eventually hard drive gone on laptop, this may have been cause of problem,
is it worthwhile replacing hard drive 32 gb around £25.00 , plus it needs a new charger and battery,
or should I just replace laptop
its an asus on windows 7 about 5 years old.
cosmetically , its in quite good condition
    Nice to save.
