Their liability ends after 6 years.

There's no good reason for a retailer to retain details for over six years, unless they want to retain a "bad" customer database, which wouldn't apply to the OP, or to market to them (which isn't a good reason if they opt out.)

Well, Consumer Protection Act has a timeframe of 10 years. So right there, is a reason why retailers should keep details if given.

Actually they need to keep detailed records for a minimum of 6 years from the end of the financial period. So if a transaction were in the 2015/2016 year, they would need to keep the records until at least april 2022.

However given the OP seems to want the details deleted after less than a week, we're really debating a moot point. OP's request is unreasonable imo. And if there were anything enforcing it, it would be all too easy for a customer to claim they never received something. And how would the company possibly prove otherwise if they had deleted all personal information belonging to the OP?

Personally, I don't have a problem with companies I chose to give my details to, keeping my details for as long as they need to. My only issue is with companies who use that information for purposes you didn't agree to, pass it on to other companies or even worse, sell your data to other companies. IMO providing them with your data shouldn't give them ownership of it or distribution rights, only a licence to use it.

OP, if they do agree to delete all information relating to your purchase how can you realistically expect them to help you if you have a problem with your purchase in the future?

....... large ticket appliances stored in a database with their Name, Address, DOP, Receipt Number, store purchased from, price paid, if it makes the their life easier in not having to prove Proof of Purchase anytime something goes wrong.
If only this were true! How many times do we see threads on here with "I've lost my receipt and company/shop/supplier say I didn't buy it from them and no they cannot search the database?"

Currys do have a database though. If you ever go in and buy something and they ask for your name, address and postcode that's because that item gets logged in an external system so that if you come back to replace a product that's somewhat expensive but not heavy (say a microwave) you don't have to dig through the ol' receipt and bills draw to find it. Most big retailers do something similar.

Currys can even (potentially) find the transaction if you paid by card and have the same card with you.

The problem with searching the database usually occurs when you purchase in cash and do not supply your name and address. Because even if you can tell the shop what you bought and when they still can't say that you bought it because it won't have your name and address attracted to the purchase. You could have stolen it and the transaction could be from another customers purchase. They may even be several purchases that day. Some might argue just pick one of the sales at random but they all will have a reciept number attached. If the wrong one was, for example, refunded and the correct customer comes in wanting a refund then it will look like they have already received one.

Most retail tills (certainly the ones in currys) wouldn't let you advance until you have entered the information, still didn't stop staff from putting "Mr N N of 123 N road NN1 1NN N@N.com" to bypass it if customers really kicked off mind.
