Ubuntu is also a useful way of accessing Windows should the Windows o/s become corrupt.
I rather liked Crunch Bang Linux but the grub menu has to be written for dual booting as I am unaware of any utilities that will do that job automatically.
As I said before Ubuntu is Idiot proof & a useful addition to Windows.
I had thought Crunchbang had gone but having just checked it is still available. I believe the best OS currently is Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon edition http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=190.
It can be set up as a dual boot with Windows following the instructions here http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/dual-boot-windows-8-ubuntu.html (Linux Mint is derived from Ubuntu)
On my dual boot system I rarely have need of the Windows side and that way I keep things running smoothly and safely.

The Sandbox method mentioned above sounds a good idea & there is a flavour of Linux available which utilises this method of isolation as security.

Huh -- I hadn't heard of Qubes. Sounds like a very interesting concept -- I'll have to have a play around with it. Cheers for the suggestion.

You don't need a utility for that! Just chainload the NT bootloader:
