Don't think its a hack, sounds more like a bodged update to the site went wrong, hence them being able to restore the previous version in a couple of hours. 2 hours sounds about right for aa diagnostic, restore previous version and test before relaunching.
I know, I've done it before, although not quite so spectacularly.0 -
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how to respond to a website security issue: stop it getting worse, communicate effectively with customers and the media THEN correct the error and make sure if can't happen again.

Would almost have agreed with you but listening to people who experienced this on the radio, it was quite a few hours between people reporting this to M&S and their eventually closing the site down, it wasn't automatic for them and should have been shut down far earlier than it was.0
