credit card bill - date of transaction vs date of entry

hello,

I have a Halifax Credit card that has 0% on purchases for 18 months.

I noticed an interest charge on my account, and when I rang them I was told that I went over my credit limit so I was charged a fee of £12, and then a hefty interest charge (apparently the interest free period ends if you go over the limit).

When I looked at my bill I noted that there are two columns 'date of transaction' and 'date entered'.

Going by the 'date entered' column, I did not go over my limit, but if I go by the 'Date of transaction' column, then I did go over my limit for 24hours.

Does anyone know which column takes precedence?

Thanks

PC

It looks as if Date of Transaction takes precedence.

Phone up and grovel and see if you can get the offer reinstated. If it's a first offence, you may get lucky.

It's the Transaction Date that's the important one. This is when the transaction was actually made. Most retailers will reconcile their transactions at close of business each day, and send the data to the card company, but some may take a few days before sending the data. So you'll sometimes not see a transaction appearing on your statement for a couple of days.

But it's the Transaction Date that counts when it comes to calculating your outstanding balance.
