what are my rights?

A builder sanded my floors and done a lousy job. I'm disgusted with the work he's done and I''m very angry that I'm unable to walk on these floors as they are so rough and uneven . What can I do to get my money back? I have sent him a letter and contacted trading standards. I have given him 7 days to contact me to rectify the situation, which I don;t think he is able to do so as he didn;t get it right first time! I paid over the odds than any other professional company to do the job but he had a so called good reputation!
Nice to save.

Why did you pay him? Surely Trading Standards told you your rights? Did they suggest 7 days? What if he has gone away?0

They're too rough and uneven to be walked across?
Did he use a plough?The money, Dave...0 -
Did he turn up on a horse?? Rogue builders exists and its well know, the only other thing you could do is make sure no-one else uses him anymore.0

He seems to be doing other houses but I think he isn;t able to sand floors, thinking that he can, he might be good at other things but sanding isn;t one of them!
Well, when he left the floors they seemed ok , I didn;t know what to expect but when I tried to sweep or mop the floor , it was impossible as the mop was getting snagged upon the splinters and roughness of the planks. ( I hope that makes sense). He won;t go away because he lives not very far.Nice to save.0 -

I think hollydays meant perhaps he is on holiday.0 -
Homeworker, I'm a bit puzzled. If there are splinters it suggests that the floor has not been sanded at all. Did he bring a proper floor sander? Were you there when he did the job?
This is what he should have done, btw.0 -
I too am surprised - I managed to sand my floors with a rented sander, no experience and really wonky, warped old Victorian floorboards. Did you tell him that you wanted them bare, or was he expecting you to varnish the floors? Or wax them? I expect that there would be different grades of sanding depending on whether you were going to varnish or wax the boards afterwards, but even a numpty like me can manage a nice finish then someone purporting to be a professional shoud be able to!
BTW - if you just have the boards bare, you maybe shouldn't be mopping them at all as they will just absorb the water.0 -
He did hire a sander from the hire shops.
Its very hard to describe but I have had three professional floor sanding companies in and all have said that they were disgusted by the poor workmandship most of the floor was sanded by the edge sander by the marks , also mentioned that they there were burn marks, also didn;t go in the right direction of the grain and didn;t use the right grade of sanding papers .
They have been stained and varnished twice , the problem lies not in the absorbancy but the roughness of floors! I hope that makes sense.Nice to save.0 -
And what does he say about it? Or havent you spoken at all? How did you get recommended him?0

He came recommended. I haven;t spoken to him as I wrote the letter and awaiting his call for him to rectify the situation.Nice to save.0
