I peel and chop them up and freeze in bags - I have a whole shelf of chopped apple :) I use them in crumbles, cakes, puddings, chutneys or (occasionally) apple sauce :)

If you're short on freezer space, consider bottling.

Buying the kilner jars can be an expensive outlay, but they can sometimes be found in charity shops / freecycle - and sometimes they come as part of a gift food pack.

I bottle stuff throughout the year so am always making good use of them.
  • I was given a bag of apples. I love apple pie, so I made one. DH doesn't eat fruit, so guess who ate the lot, over 5 days, not good for the figure.
I plan to make a crumble which will no doubt go the same way.

I've made chilli jelly - the base is apples, stewed, then strained.

In fact, what you could do is wash, peel and core the apples, use the 'good' flesh and stew (gently) for pies or crumbles then put the skin and cores in another pan, with just enough water to cover, and boil until soft, cool and strain through a jelly-bag or muslin overnight. That would give you a pectin-rich jelly base to use for sweet or savoury jellies!

For jellies use 1 pound of sugar to each pint of strained juice and bring to boil as for jam.
