online storage

Options
after a recent hard disk death i'm looking for a reliable online storage place.

I have gmail do thats fine for word docs but I need something for photos. Not for viewing just to store incase of PC malfunction!

I've googled and found loads of trials, monthly subscriptions and assorted random places. I wondered if anyone else had used them and if they were reliable.

I'd need a few gbs I should think.

Matt

Check with your ISP, most of them provide you with some storage space, though its usually a matter of Mb rather than the Gb you are looking for. But its a start :)

Xdrive (5GB free) is owned by AOL so it they aren't likely to suddenly disappear.
I've had problems in the past with the desktop app (haven't tried it recently), but their online interface works fine.

Some people in the UK have had difficulty in the past registering with them, but you can just sign up for another service, like AOL email to get the required Aol screen name, and then you get in no problem.
  • personally i'd just use an external hard drive. as backing up online can be very time consuming as u try and upload 5 gb. will take u some fair time. and that will virtually kill your internet connection (well not kill just slow it a fair bit)

flash drives. 4gb under £20 now...

also if any of them don't suit u. just buy hosting services. like streamline.net (but not streamline as there expensive) and that will give u about 1 TB roughly

    From the web site:-

Register for free, upload files up to 1GB and use your 6GB of storage. If you want more, we will be adding Premium Access soon !

Public directory is also available, you can upload files without a need to register.

I've been using it for a couple of years with no problems. I zip & encrypt files before uploading.

i agree with richyrichuk, flash drives are probably the way to go! You#ll always have the data with you! If you store everything online, and then you lose your connection, your stuck!..

As for online storage though, Windows are starting a new service (it's in beta at the moment), called skydrive. They offer 500mb. Seems pretty decent.
