Problem with Hermes

Hi, I'm hoping to get some advice if possible.

I sent an eBay parcel through Hermes which was just inside of the maximum allowed to send (I had measured each side and added 1 extra cm on each to ensure I had covered myself and when worked out the total circumference was 223 cm)

Basically my parcel has been delivered but I have an invoice from Hermes for £10.80.

I am accused of having a parcel that was 152 cm long ( over the max of 120 cm allowed in their network).

The parcel was absolutely not and nowhere near 152 cm long. It was actually 62 cm but when working out the circumference I put it as 63 cm.
I feel very unfairly treated with this invoice and which I have been told will remain on my account until a payment is made.

What do you think I should do? Pay an unfair invoice?
Should I ask for proof because it categorically was not 152 cm long.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.

  • Did you remember to times the two shortest sides by 2 before adding them to the length?

  • Hi, thanks for your reply.
Yes, I did add the 2 shortest sides together and multiplied them by 2 then added the length. But also I did add 1 cm on each side before adding then multiplying. Total was 223 cm.

This parcel was categorically not the 152 cm they claim. What do you think ? Do I pay up even though I've done nothing wrong?

Are they holding the parcel until you've paid the invoice?
  • Not that this really helps the OP but i sent a parcel last week which was almost up to the max dimensions. I took photos of it with a tape measure on it showing the dimensions before i sent it. I do the same with scales if its a little under the weight band - call me cynical but where Couriers are concerned..
  • Hi, thanks all for your replies. They are not holding the parcel. It has been delivered because something along the lines of 'we don't always have the room to hold the parcels within our network' was a reply when I said it had been delivered. Emails before I said this suggested it would be destroyed if I don't pay within 7 days.

How they come to 152 cm I'll never know it was most definitely not.

I wish I had taken photos of it with a tape measure but it's too late now. What do you think I should do? Would you guys pay an unfair invoice like this

If there's no reason for you to pay it (ie getting it delivered or using Hermes again any time soon) then don't. Send a message, preferably in writing, telling them they have made a mistake and to cancel the invoice. Also request that they do not contact you again for payment of money that you most definitely do not owe. If you like try contacting them on Twitter and/or Facebook to get the invoice cancelled.
The worst that will happen is that they will pass it to a debt collection agency who will send you hollow threats of what may happen to you if you don't pay. They will have no power to do any more and it will eventually get written off without affecting you in any way.

Thanks for your help. Great idea re Facebook will definitely post on there. Like you say, it has been delivered so I don't have to worry about that. I even contacted the eBay buyer saying ' I see your parcel has been delivered from the tracking but I just want to check you have received it safely' and yes, all great.

I did intend on using Hermes again, I've a few auctions on at the moment and bids placed so I will need to post - could use RM but will cost more for signed for and not reliable.

Could I open another Hermes account and use that or will they be able to link them.

Scared to ignore it too but it is very unjust. I wouldn't have sent it if it was over but it was just okay to go through.

Thanks very much for your help though. Much appreciated👍

I had this with them before also, except mine was weight, they claimed I was over I told them I knew I wasn't (as they had already delivered I decided to fight my ground) I did, they invoiced me Via PayPal twice, I didn't pay told them several times via Facebook and chat I wasn't paying as they were wrong and eventually they gave up asking ;-) I use Hermes to send around 40 parcels a month and they haven't raised the issue again since ;-) was about 8 months ago lol :-)

Mines been delivered too but I have 3 items with bids at the mo which would be Hermes delivery. I like the tracked delivery which RM just don't compete with.
If I send them, they might hold them hostage until I pay the invoice but it'll cost £3.90 signed for if I use RM so I'll end up spending the extra in the end

I have contacted them again with a photo of my parcel took from the listing (no tape measure by it though) they should be able to tell its not 152 length I have asked them to cancel the invoice on my account. Don't suppose it'll work though.
