    And to throw another curve ball ;) ... some browser's won't show a tooltip for the Alt text, so you should also include a Title attribute as well. :)

    <img src="whatever.jpg" alt="My alt text" title="My alt text" />

    Intrigued - Can you name one ?

    Chrome and Firefox, as I recall. (It's been a while since I last checked). For example, if you check the avatars on this very forum you'll see the IMG tags have both alt and title attributes set. :)

    Edit: I've just done a test. An image in a web page that only has alt text does not show a tooltip in Chrome; add the title attribute and it does.

    Then they have not been coded correctly.
    See here for browser compatibility :-

    Alt text is NOT a tooltip .. There are different things.

    Alt text is what the browser displays if it cant display the image.

    Indeed you are correct, but IE browsers have always shown a tooltip for the Alt text. So the default "expectation" is for a tooltip to appear. (Rightly or wrongly). :)

    You should make up your mind ;)

    Only IE shows/showed the alt text as tool tip, because MS doesn't care about standards. As you wrote in the second quote, it is not correct. The title attribute should show as tool tip.
