Engagement ring insurance

Previously the ring was covered under our contents insurance but we're renewing and the new T&Cs won't cover the ring for loss or damage outside the home.

I've looked at a few other home insurers and same problem.

The ring has a value of £8K according to the local jewellers who designed it (using heirloom stones BTW, OH isn't so crazy that he'd spend £8K on a ring).

I saw a website that only insures jewellery but I'd rather have a recommendation before spending silly money on a policy that won't pay out.

Have you tried asking your insurer if they will cover it as a specified item?

I have mine covered like that the limit away from home is normally 1.5K but because I have specified it at 5K they will still cover it

They said they won't insure it out of the home because it's so high value. The guy on the phone was quite rude and said if he had an £8K ring he'd put it in a safe and never wear it!

Try Hiscoxs insurance they do high value items so do ABC (part of LV they are normally on most aggregators like compare the market) also try ringing a broker but stay clear of Swintons as they normally have a panel of insurers

I'm insured with LV and they didn't seem that bothered

I wouldn't take the advice from Bijan - check out his other posts.

In one he doesn't say he works for that jeweller, he reckons he found them when he was looking for a ring for his girlfriend:

I found them on a search for Hatton Garden a Reviews and they came up on Trip Advisor.

Choose them on being able to offer a no quibble return even on bespoke commissions. They were confident my girlfriend would love it and the risk was on them if she didn't. The ring was awesome Sarah-Jane the gemologist was lovely too
Now he works for them? smiley-rolleyes008.gif
That was a lucky find. :rotfl:

Maybe they were so impressed with him as a customer they offered him a job

As for the op I'd suggest looking into other home insurers, will others insure the ring as a named item? My experience with a different high value item (bicycle) was that changing home insurer was far cheaper than staying with the cheaper option and arranging a separate specialist policy.

Don't forget Topcashback for the new insurance policy! I got £57 back recently :)
  • I'd contact Highworth Insurance. They specialise in jewellery insurance. They will quote you on a standalone basis and as part of a higher value home insurance policy. We ended up taking a standalone policy. Not had a to make a claim but they're nice people to deal with.
  • I have mine insured with TH March. Fab service.
